How to Set Bedtime Rules for Yoto Players

By Samuel Coe, founder of Coe Code LLC

Last Updated: March 5, 2026

Yoto Guardian's quiet time feature enforces bedtime automatically. Once configured, any Yoto player that is online will be paused at the scheduled start time and remain paused until quiet time ends — even if your child inserts a card after bedtime. This guide walks through the exact setup steps.

Before You Start

  • Create a free Yoto Guardian account at yotoguardian.com
  • Link your Yoto account using the OAuth button in the setup wizard
  • Your Yoto player must be connected to WiFi for enforcement to work

Step 1: Open the Dashboard

After logging in, you will land on the live dashboard. Each Yoto player in your family account appears as a device card. You can configure quiet time per device or for all devices at once using the “All Devices” panel at the top.

Step 2: Enable Quiet Time

On any device card (or on the All Devices panel), find the Quiet Time toggle and enable it. A schedule editor will appear showing the days of the week with start and end time fields.

Set your bedtime start time (for example, 8:00 PM) and your quiet time end time (for example, 7:00 AM). Playback will be blocked between these hours every day.

Step 3: Customize Per-Day Schedules

The quiet time schedule supports per-day overrides. For each day of the week, you can:

  • Use the default start and end times
  • Set a different start or end time for that day only
  • Disable quiet time entirely for that day

This is useful for later bedtimes on Friday and Saturday, or for disabling quiet time on days when your child's schedule is different.

Step 4: Save the Schedule

Click “Save” or the confirmation button to apply the schedule. The schedule takes effect immediately — if it is currently within quiet time hours, the player will be paused right away.

Step 5: (Optional) Set a Transition Card

Instead of simply pausing when quiet time begins, you can configure a transition card to play at bedtime. Common choices include:

  • Yoto's Sleep Radio card for ambient sounds
  • A calming audiobook or playlist
  • Any card in your family library, including a specific chapter or track

Enable the “Quiet Time Transition” option on the device card, then select the card and track from your library. When quiet time starts, the player will switch to that card rather than pausing immediately.

Granting Bonus Time

For “one more story” moments, use the quiet time bonus feature. From the device card on the dashboard, tap the bonus button and select how long to extend playback:

  • 15 minutes
  • 30 minutes
  • 1 hour

The bonus expires automatically — you do not need to remember to re-enable quiet time. You can also apply the same bonus to all devices at once from the global panel.

Combining with Daily Listening Limits

Quiet time and daily listening limits work independently and can be used together. If your child reaches the daily listening cap before bedtime, the player will pause automatically. If quiet time starts before the daily cap is reached, the player will pause at bedtime regardless. Both limits reset at midnight.

Troubleshooting

  • Player not pausing at bedtime: Check that the player is connected to WiFi. Quiet time enforcement requires an active internet connection.
  • Wrong timezone: Verify your timezone is configured correctly in Yoto Guardian settings. All schedule times are based on your configured timezone.
  • Player pausing unexpectedly: Check whether you have a daily listening limit set that has been reached.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I set a bedtime for my Yoto player?

Use Yoto Guardian's quiet time feature. Log in, open the device card or the All Devices panel, enable Quiet Time, and set your start and end times. The player will automatically pause when quiet time begins and resume when it ends.

Can I set different bedtimes for weekdays and weekends?

Yes. Yoto Guardian supports per-day quiet time schedules. Set a default schedule for most days, then override individual days — for example, a later bedtime on Friday and Saturday nights.

What happens if my child is listening when bedtime starts?

If a card is already playing when quiet time starts, Yoto Guardian will pause it within seconds. If you configure a transition card, it will switch to that card instead of just pausing.

Can I give my child a few extra minutes past bedtime?

Yes. The quiet time bonus feature lets you extend playback by 15 minutes, 30 minutes, or 1 hour without disabling quiet time. The extension expires automatically.

Does quiet time work if the Yoto player is offline?

No. Quiet time enforcement requires the Yoto player to be connected to WiFi. If the player is offline when quiet time starts, it will be enforced as soon as the player reconnects.
