Playback Controls

Quiet Time

Blocks all playback during scheduled hours — great for bedtime or nap time. If a card is inserted during quiet time, it will immediately pause. You can set different schedules for each day of the week, or disable specific days entirely.

  • Set it once and forget it — quiet time activates automatically every night.
  • If a card is already playing when quiet time starts, it will be paused within seconds.

Quiet Time Transition

Instead of pausing the player when quiet time begins, you can choose a specific card to play instead. This is perfect for switching to Sleep Radio or a wind-down playlist at bedtime.

  • Pick any card from your family library, including a specific chapter or track.
  • You can apply the same transition card to all devices at once.

Quiet Time Bonus

Need a few more minutes past bedtime? Quiet time bonus lets you temporarily extend playback by 15 minutes, 30 minutes, or 1 hour. The bonus expires automatically — no need to remember to re-enable quiet time.

Daily Listening Limit

Set a daily cap on total listening time. When the limit is reached, playback pauses automatically. The limit resets every day at midnight in your configured timezone. You can set the limit in 15-minute increments.

  • The progress bar on each device card shows how much time has been used and how much remains.

Daily Limit Bonus

Add (or subtract) bonus time on the fly. Grant an extra 15 minutes, 30 minutes, or 1 hour of listening for the day, or pull back 15 minutes if needed. Bonus time resets at midnight along with the daily limit.

Instant Pause

Pause any individual player with one tap, or pause all devices at once from the global controls. Paused devices won't play anything until you resume them — even if a card is inserted.

Playback Rules

Create rules for specific cards to control what happens during playback. Auto-skip certain tracks, stop playback after a specific chapter, or automatically transition to a different card when a track ends.

  • Rules are tied to specific cards — you can have different rules for each card in your library.
  • Access rules from the device card when a card is playing, or from the Library page.

Stop After

Tell the player to stop after the current track or chapter finishes. This appears automatically on the device card whenever something is playing — perfect for "one more story" moments.

Schedules

Quiet Time Schedule

Configure quiet time start and end times with per-day overrides. Set a default schedule that applies to most days, then customize individual days — for example, a later bedtime on weekends.

Day/Night Schedule

Override the Yoto player's built-in day/night mode with your own schedule. Set custom wake and sleep times for each day of the week. This controls when the player switches between its day and night display modes.

  • This is separate from quiet time — day/night mode controls the player's display, while quiet time controls playback.

Monitoring

Live Dashboard

See what every player is doing in real time. The dashboard shows the currently playing track, online/offline status, daily usage progress, and a weekly listening chart — all updated live via server-sent events.

  • The green dot next to a device name means it's online and connected.
  • Today's listening history shows the last 5 tracks played, with a "View All" option for the full history.
  • The weekly bar chart shows listening time for the last 7 days.

Library

Library Manager

Upload custom audiobooks to your Yoto family library. Drop a zip file or folder of audio files and the upload wizard walks you through organizing chapters, setting metadata, and choosing artwork. AI can automatically suggest titles, descriptions, and chapter icons.

  • Supports MP3, AAC, M4A, OGG, and Opus formats.
  • Bulk upload multiple audiobooks at once by dropping multiple zips.
  • AI features use your configured Anthropic/OpenAI key, or a Yoto Guardian-provided key when available.

WiFi Required

Quiet time enforcement, daily listening limits, and listening-time tracking all require the Yoto player to be connected to WiFi. Guardian communicates with Yoto's cloud in real time — if a player is offline, these features won't take effect until it reconnects.

Global vs. Per-Device Controls

Most features can be configured per device or applied to all devices at once. The “All Devices” panel at the top of the dashboard lets you enable/disable features, set schedules, and add bonus time across every player simultaneously. Individual device cards let you fine-tune settings for each player.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Yoto Guardian?

Yoto Guardian is a free web app that gives parents real-time parental controls for Yoto audio players. It adds features Yoto doesn't offer natively — quiet time scheduling, daily listening limits, instant pause, per-card playback rules, and a library manager for uploading custom audiobooks with AI-generated metadata.

Is Yoto Guardian free?

Yes. Yoto Guardian is completely free to use with no subscription or payment required. You just need a Yoto account and a Yoto player connected to WiFi.

Does Yoto Guardian work without WiFi?

Quiet time enforcement, daily listening limits, listening-time tracking, and playback-rule enforcement all require the Yoto player to be connected to WiFi. Guardian communicates with Yoto's cloud in real time — if a player is offline, these features won't take effect until it reconnects. You can still configure rules and upload content while a player is offline, but enforcement happens after reconnect.

Is Yoto Guardian made by Yoto?

No. Yoto Guardian is an independent project built by Coe Code LLC, not affiliated with Yoto Ltd. It connects to your Yoto account via OAuth (the same way you log in to the official Yoto app) and communicates through Yoto's cloud API to control your players.

How does quiet time work?

Quiet time blocks all playback during scheduled hours. If a card is inserted during quiet time, it will be immediately paused within seconds. You can set different schedules for each day of the week, disable specific days, and grant one-time bonus extensions (15 minutes, 30 minutes, or 1 hour) when needed.

Can I upload my own audiobooks?

Yes. The Library Manager lets you upload custom audiobooks to your Yoto family library. Drop a zip file or folder of audio files (MP3, AAC, M4A, OGG, Opus), organize chapters, set metadata, and choose artwork. AI can automatically suggest titles, descriptions, and chapter icons when AI access is available (your configured key or Yoto Guardian-provided access).
